Professor Siffrant Michel, 53, a school director and senior official at the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training, passed away Friday night after being struck by a stray bullet in Delmas.
The news was confirmed this Saturday by Professor Victor Benoit, the national representative of the Gathering of Social Democrats for the Progress of Haiti (RSD), where Siffrant Michel served as Secretary-General.
The incident occurred during a violent clash between the police and armed bandits, according to Victor Benoit, citing the victim’s relatives. Professor Michel was struck in the chest and died instantly, he specified.
“This is a massive loss for the party and the educational sector,” said Victor Benoit, noting that in addition to his political activism, Siffrant Michel was an eminent professor of mathematics and physics.
Originally from the Artibonite region, Siffrant Michel worked tirelessly to build an honorable reputation, and his name was never associated with anything illicit, Benoit added with deep regret.
He concluded by stating it is long overdue for authorities to take concrete measures to halt the wave of insecurity currently sweeping the country, particularly the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.
