Armed violence triggers new wave of displacement<\/h4>\n

Rising insecurity in Haiti<\/span><\/span> continues to fuel a growing humanitarian crisis. According to figures released by the International Organization for Migration<\/span><\/span> (IOM), more than 3,000 people were recently forced to flee their homes following a series of armed attacks in several sectors of Cit\u00e9 Soleil<\/span><\/span> and Croix-des-Bouquets<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

The new wave of displacement further worsens an already alarming situation. In its latest report, the IOM estimates that Haiti now has more than 1.45 million internally displaced people, a level comparable to the aftermath of the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake<\/span><\/span>.<\/a><\/p>\n

The most recent population movements are believed to be directly linked to escalating clashes between armed groups, particularly in the localities of Canaran<\/span><\/span> and Pierre 6<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Since March 8, 2026, heavily armed men have reportedly carried out repeated attacks in these areas, spreading fear among residents and forcing families to flee.<\/p>\n

Displaced families face worsening living conditions<\/h4>\n

Most of the people who fled their homes have sought refuge with relatives or acquaintances. The IOM estimates that nearly three-quarters of the displaced are currently staying with host families.<\/p>\n

However, many of these households are themselves living in economically fragile conditions, increasing pressure on already limited resources.<\/p>\n

Other families have settled in two newly created informal displacement sites, adding to five existing sites already sheltering displaced people across the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

These improvised settlements lack basic infrastructure, including reliable access to drinking water, adequate sanitation facilities, sufficient health care, and consistent food assistance.<\/p>\n
