Saint-Marc on Edge: Protests, Clashes and First Arrests

A Tense Morning Marked by Disruptions

Saint-Marc experienced a turbulent morning this Monday, May 4, 2026, marked by protest movements, police interventions and several disruptions to daily activities.

Saint-Marc, May 4, 2026 — From the early hours of the day, groups of protesters set up barricades made notably of burning tires in various parts of the commune, partially paralyzing traffic.

Faced with this climate of insecurity, several institutions chose to suspend their activities. Commercial banks did not open their doors, while some schools sent students home as a precautionary measure.

Residents Denounce Rising Armed Violence

At the origin of this mobilization are residents of the locality of Jean-Denis, in Bas-Artibonite, who took to the streets of the city of Nissage Saget to denounce the rise in armed violence in the region.

Protesters are demanding a firm response from the authorities to the expansion of armed groups that continue to impose their rule in several areas.

Police Intervention and First Casualties

The intervention of law enforcement did not take long. To disperse the crowd and restore traffic, the police resorted to gunfire as well as the use of tear gas, triggering scenes of panic in several neighborhoods.

According to Michadson Fénélon, a provisional toll reports at least one person wounded by gunfire and two individuals arrested during the clashes.
