Massive Fire at Dominican Republic Resort Leaves One Dead and 1,700 Tourists Evacuated

A major fire struck the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach resort in Bayahibe, one of the Dominican Republic’s most popular tourist destinations, on Friday 19 of une.

According to Dominican emergency services (DAEH), a 46-year-old Italian tourist, identified as Francesca Valentino, died from smoke inhalation during the incident. Three other people were transported to medical facilities, while six received treatment at the scene. Those affected included hotel guests, visitors, and emergency responders.

Dramatic aerial footage shared on social media showed the scale of the blaze, which spread rapidly across several sections of the resort. Authorities indicated that highly flammable thatched roofs and strong winds contributed to the rapid expansion of the fire.

Approximately 1,700 tourists and staff members were evacuated to the beach and nearby hotels as emergency teams worked to contain the flames. The evacuation operation involved firefighters, civil defense personnel, and other emergency agencies.

After several hours, firefighters succeeded in bringing the blaze under control.

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the incident started and whether any responsibilities can be established.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about safety standards in Caribbean tourist resorts, particularly regarding the use of highly combustible construction materials in facilities that accommodate large numbers of visitors.
