Haiti: Fire at Police HQ in Port-au-Prince, No Casualties

Fire breaks out at key police facility

A fire erupted on the morning of March 19, 2026, at the West I Departmental Directorate (DDO-1) of the Haitian National Police in Port-au-Prince, causing material and structural damage, according to an official statement.

Authorities confirmed that no deaths or injuries were reported, though the incident temporarily disrupted operations within the building.

Damage reported, cause still unknown

According to the police communications unit, the fire caused significant internal damage, but the full extent of the losses is still being assessed.

At this stage, the origin of the blaze remains undetermined.

Police chief visits scene

Acting Director General André Jonas Vladimir Paraison visited the site shortly after the incident to evaluate the situation and gather preliminary information.

His visit highlights the sensitivity of the incident, given the strategic importance of the DDO-1 in managing security in the capital.

Criminal investigation launched

Authorities have assigned the investigation to the Central Directorate of the Judicial Police (DCPJ), which is tasked with determining the exact cause of the fire.

Investigators are expected to examine multiple scenarios, including accidental and intentional causes.

Firefighters prevent casualties

The Port-au-Prince Fire Department was credited for its rapid response, which allowed firefighters to contain the blaze quickly and prevent any loss of life.

Their intervention was described as crucial in limiting the impact of the incident.

Security operations remain active

Despite the disruption, police officials stated that security operations remain fully operational, particularly in sensitive areas such as the Champ-de-Mars zone and surrounding neighborhoods.

Incident follows recent leadership change

The fire comes less than 48 hours after the controversial removal of divisional commissioner Ader Jacques, who was replaced by Yvon Cantave.

While no link has been established between the two events, the timing adds to ongoing tensions within the security apparatus.

A sensitive moment for security forces

This incident occurs amid a broader context of heightened insecurity in Port-au-Prince, where authorities face increasing pressure to restore order.

The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched as officials seek to ensure accountability and operational continuity.
