Aviation incident: cargo aircraft exits runway and stops on public road
A cargo plane operated by IBC Airways was involved in an incident on Friday afternoon at Antoine Simon International Airport in Les Cayes, southern Haiti, after overshooting the runway during landing and coming to a stop on National Road No. 7.
According to preliminary reports, the aircraft, carrying around ten people, experienced braking difficulties during landing. Adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, reportedly made the runway slippery, complicating the maneuver.
The aircraft crossed the airport perimeter after impact with safety barriers and came to rest near the roadside. The incident caused material damage, including the loss of a wheel, while the front section of the plane remained exposed close to the public roadway.
Emergency response: no injuries reported, investigation underway
Despite the severity of the incident, no fatalities or injuries were reported. Passengers and crew members were described as shaken but safe, according to witnesses at the scene.
Authorities quickly deployed a security perimeter. Units from the Haitian National Police, emergency responders, and teams from the Directorate of Civil Protection were mobilized to secure the area and assess the situation.
An evaluation is ongoing to determine the exact causes of the runway overrun, while officials coordinate the removal of the aircraft and restoration of normal operations.
