Students raise alarm over prolonged hospital closure
Medical students in Port-au-Prince have intensified calls for the reopening of the Hôpital de l’Université d’État d’Haïti (HUEH), commonly known as the General Hospital, citing serious consequences for both patients and medical training.
During a press briefing held on March 17, 2026, the students denounced the continued inaccessibility of one of Haiti’s largest public health institutions and announced an imminent protest.
Hospital closed since 2024 amid armed violence
The HUEH has remained closed since February 2024 due to armed violence in downtown Port-au-Prince, which forced the suspension of services.
Students described the situation as untenable, highlighting the growing strain on the country’s already fragile healthcare system.
They warned that many patients are now deprived of essential medical services, as alternative facilities struggle to absorb demand.
Training crisis for future doctors
Beyond the impact on patient care, the closure is also affecting the practical training of newly graduated doctors.
Students noted that the lack of operational hospital facilities has made it difficult to:
Complete clinical internships
Gain hands-on medical experience
Meet academic training requirements
They stressed the strategic role of HUEH in Haiti’s medical education system, warning that its prolonged closure could undermine the quality of future healthcare professionals.
Protest planned to demand government action
In response to the ongoing crisis, the students have announced a mobilization scheduled for March 18, 2026.
The demonstration is set to begin at the State University of Haiti rectorate and proceed toward the Office of the Prime Minister.
The goal is to pressure authorities into taking concrete and immediate action.
Call to implement relocation plan
Among their key demands, the students are calling for the rapid implementation of a temporary hospital relocation project, outlined in an agreement signed in late 2025.
The initiative was intended to:
Resume medical services
Ease pressure on the healthcare system
Provide adequate training environments
However, students noted that no significant progress has been made months after the agreement, prompting renewed calls for action.
Urgent appeal to authorities
The students are urging Haitian authorities to act without delay to:
Restore access to healthcare services
Ensure proper training conditions for medical professionals
Stabilize a critical sector under increasing pressure
Their mobilization reflects growing concern over the long-term impact of the crisis on Haiti’s healthcare system.
