Fuel hike sparks transport protest in Delmas

Protest: drivers paralyze key roads in Delmas

Road traffic was severely disrupted on Monday across the metropolitan area, particularly in Delmas, where public transport drivers staged protests against the recent fuel price increase.

From early morning, several strategic routes became impassable, including Delmas 33, Delmas 65, Delmas 75 and the TNH intersection. Drivers operating between Delmas and Lalue halted services, significantly affecting commuters.

Barricades were erected, with burning tires used to block roads. Some protesters forced passengers out of vehicles, while minibuses were positioned across lanes to prevent circulation.

Rising costs fuel anger among transport workers

The protest stems from what drivers describe as an excessive increase in fuel prices, which they say threatens their ability to operate sustainably.

They are calling on authorities to revise prices downward or introduce targeted support measures. Several drivers also denounced inconsistencies in pricing, arguing that declines in global markets are not reflected locally.

Government defends price adjustment

In response, authorities maintain that the price revision is linked to rising global fuel costs. They also point to austerity measures implemented within the public administration prior to the adjustment.

Capital disrupted amid mounting tensions

The impact of the protest is already being felt across Port-au-Prince, where many residents are struggling to move around.

Tensions remain high in affected areas, and the situation could evolve further in the coming days as uncertainty persists.
