Access to Credit in Haiti: Men Continue to Dominate Financing in Q3 2024-2025

The third quarter of the 2024-2025 fiscal year took place against an international backdrop of high trade tensions. Increased customs tariffs initiated by the United States, fueled by geopolitical fragmentation, heightened global economic volatility. According to the Monetary Policy Note published by the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH), the local economy has been severely impacted by the security crisis combined with these global trade shifts and supply chain disruptions.

In this uncertain climate, major global monetary authorities have adopted a cautious approach to anticipate a global slowdown and contain inflationary risks.

BRH Actions to Support the Haitian Economy

To counter persistent constraints, the BRH continues its initiatives to:

• Support national production;

• Strengthen the resilience of the financial system;

• Protect sector debtors;

• Maintain exchange rate stability and curb price volatility.

Credit Allocation in the Third Quarter

During this period, credit volume in Gourdes (HTG) was distributed as follows:

• 55,083.63 MG (Million Gourdes) granted to businesses;

• 59,910.45 MG to individuals.

For credit in U.S. Dollars:

• $816.72 million USD allocated to legal entities (businesses);

• $139.79 million USD to individuals.

Gender Distribution

Data reveals a significant male predominance in credit access:

• 63.37% of loans in Gourdes (37,966.86 MG) were granted to men.

• Women received 21,919.44 MG (compared to 21,558.63 MG in Q2 2025).

• In foreign currency, men captured 75.66% of the portfolio, totaling $105.76 million USD for the quarter.

Geographic Distribution

Financing reflects the country’s demographic and industrial concentration:

• 75% of total credit was allocated to the Ouest department, despite the precarious security situation.

• Followed by the Nord (6.23%), Artibonite (4.96%), and the Sud (3.21%).

• The Nord-Ouest received less than 1%, while other regions shared approximately 2% each.
