Diplomacy: Dominican Republic to chair WHO Assembly
The Dominican Republic has been unanimously selected by countries of the Americas to preside over the 79th World Health Assembly, scheduled from May 18 to 23, 2026 in Geneva.
This designation, part of the rotational system of the World Health Organization, will be formalized at the opening session. It marks a first for the country, which will lead the decision-making body bringing together 194 member states to address global health challenges.
Infrastructure: green light for Montecristi airport
At the same time, the government is advancing its infrastructure agenda with approval for the construction of a new international airport in Montecristi.
Signed by President Luis Abinader through Decree 146-26, the project will be financed by private capital and aims to boost connectivity in the northwest, stimulate tourism and generate employment.
The airport will operate under a private commercial model while remaining under state supervision and compliant with international standards.
Economy: national dialogue to tackle global pressures
Amid economic tensions linked to the global crisis triggered by the Middle East conflict, authorities have launched a national dialogue bringing together business leaders, political actors and social stakeholders.
Coordinated by José Ignacio Paliza, the initiative seeks to anticipate economic impacts, assess additional measures and gather proposals to safeguard stability and growth.
The stated objective is to mitigate the effects of global instability on Dominican households while building a broad national consensus.
