Defense: navy legacy and evolving security role

The Armada Dominicana marked its 182nd anniversary on April 10, 2026, during an academic panel held at the “27 de Febrero” naval base in Santo Domingo.

Founded in 1844 at the time of independence, the institution has evolved alongside land forces to ensure maritime defense. Speakers including Juan Daniel Balcácer and Antoliano Peralta highlighted the navy’s historical role in state-building and its adaptation to modern security threats.

Founding figures such as Juan Bautista Cambiaso, Juan Bautista Maggiolo and Juan Alejandro Acosta were also honored for their contributions to early naval operations.

Border: heightened surveillance with advanced technology

At the same time, border monitoring along Haiti has intensified. The CESFRONT has deployed advanced drones, including the DJI Matrice 30T, equipped with thermal imaging and laser measurement systems.

These devices enable continuous monitoring of sensitive areas, improving detection of illicit activities such as trafficking and irregular crossings.

Meanwhile, construction of the border wall is progressing in Dajabón, with several kilometers already completed. Additional infrastructure, including surveillance towers, is under development, with planned expansion toward Elías Piña and Jimaní.

Memory: Jet Set tragedy continues to resonate

On a different front, national memory remains marked by the Jet Set nightclub collapse. One year after the disaster, which left 236 dead and nearly 180 injured, families and survivors gathered for a commemorative ceremony.

The mass, led by Rogelio Cruz, served as a moment of remembrance and a call for accountability over alleged negligence. Participants displayed portraits of victims and paid tribute to rescue teams who worked for nearly 59 hours following the collapse.

The movement “Justicia Jet Set” continues to demand full transparency and judicial accountability, urging authorities to establish responsibility and deliver justice.
