Migration: tighter rules for temporary work permits

The Dominican Republic’s Directorate General of Migration (DGM) has introduced new regulations governing the renewal of temporary work permits (TT-1) for non-resident foreigners.

Under Resolution 001-2026, applicants must now submit a formal employment contract registered with the Ministry of Labor, explicitly excluding informal work.

The process is handled through the official platform and requires several mandatory documents, including:

  • a valid passport,
  • a worker identification card,
  • a medical certificate,
  • registration with the social security system.

Employers must guarantee the continuity of the contract and take responsibility for the worker’s repatriation at the end of employment.

Authorities have also eliminated sworn statements as proof of employment.

The DGM reiterated that these permits do not authorize informal activities such as taxi driving, motorcycle transport, or street vending. Penalties and fines are предусмотрены for employers who fail to comply.

Drug trafficking: large-scale seizures on land, sea and air

At the same time, the National Drug Control Directorate (DNCD) has carried out several major operations targeting drug trafficking networks.

Off the coast of Barahona, authorities intercepted 564 packages of cocaine, totaling 579.21 kilograms, according to forensic confirmation. Six suspects were arrested, and a boat, firearm, and equipment were seized.

In Higüey, more than 7.5 kilograms of drugs — including marijuana, cocaine, and crack — were confiscated during six coordinated raids. Seven individuals were detained, and three firearms, cash, and weighing equipment were recovered.

Airport operation: over 150 kg of cocaine seized in Punta Cana

In a separate operation, authorities seized 153.7 kilograms of cocaine at Punta Cana International Airport.

The drugs, which arrived on a flight from Medellín, were concealed in four suitcases. Security agents detected irregularities during X-ray screening before confirming the presence of 150 packages.

The operation involved canine units and military personnel.

An investigation is ongoing to verify baggage documentation and determine links to trafficking networks operating from Colombia.
