Artibonite: police ramp up operations after massacres

Artibonite, March 31, 2026. — Haiti’s National Police (PNH) has announced a series of security operations in the Artibonite department in response to a surge in armed violence that has recently struck several communities, including Jean-Denis, Pont-Benoît and Carrefour Roger.

According to a statement from the police communications office (DICOP), the operations are being carried out jointly with specialized units and members of a support force engaged in the fight against armed gangs. The interventions began on Tuesday, March 31, targeting areas such as Tè Nwa, Bwa 9, Pyè Payen, Delijè, Kan Mari, Monwi and Jean-Denis.

A response to a wave of massacres

The security offensive comes amid heightened tensions following deadly attacks attributed to armed groups operating in the region.

In Jean-Denis, several civilians were killed during violent assaults on March 28 and 29. Other localities, including Pont-Benoît, Bwajou and Carrefour Roger, have also experienced attacks resulting in casualties and the displacement of numerous residents.

Witness accounts describe scenes of panic, homes set ablaze and communities forced to flee to escape the violence.

An offensive strategy against armed groups

The PNH stated that the operations aim to “contain and neutralize” armed groups described as terrorist organizations responsible for repeated attacks on civilians.

Police say they are maintaining a reinforced presence in affected areas to reassert control over the territory.

In its statement, the institution reiterated its determination to continue operations without interruption, while calling for public cooperation.

Call for vigilance

The police urged citizens to remain vigilant and assist authorities by providing any information that could support ongoing operations. Officials insist that efforts are underway to restore order and ensure security across the region.

Despite these measures, the situation remains deeply concerning in Artibonite, where residents continue to live in fear amid persistent armed violence.
