Cité Soleil Under Gang Fire: More Than 80 Dead and Massive Population Displacement

Violence continues to intensify in Cité Soleil, where deadly clashes between armed groups have plunged several neighborhoods into chaos. According to the organization Combite pour la Paix et le Développement, at least 80 people have reportedly been killed in recent days, while thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes to save their lives.

Based on information shared by the organization, armed groups identified as 400 Mawozo, Taliban, and Chien Méchant allegedly carried out multiple attacks linked to conflicts between rival factions. The assaults created a climate of fear throughout the commune and were accompanied by widespread destruction, including the burning of numerous homes.

Cité Soleil, May 12, 2026. From the past weekend through Monday, May 11, several northern areas of the commune experienced a sharp escalation in violence. Neighborhoods including Aral, Rue Germain, Sarthe 40, Route Neuve, Blanchard, Pierre 6, Fourgy, Terre Noire, Nerette, and Malo were among the hardest hit.

Panicked by the intensity of the attacks, many residents abandoned their homes, often without being able to take their belongings.

Witness accounts collected locally point to a heavy human toll. One resident, speaking anonymously, estimated that more than 80 people had died. In addition to gunshot victims, several individuals reportedly suffered fatal medical emergencies linked to fear and the repeated sound of automatic gunfire. The exact number of casualties, however, remains unconfirmed.

In the affected areas, daily life has nearly come to a standstill. Schools have closed, businesses have suspended operations, and access to healthcare is becoming increasingly difficult. For many residents, these neighborhoods now appear to be beyond state control.

As thousands of families seek refuge in other parts of the country, calls for rapid government intervention continue to grow. This latest wave of violence once again places Haiti’s security crisis at the center of national concern.
