Artibonite attacks trigger mass displacement

Artibonite, March 31, 2026. — The security situation continues to deteriorate in Haiti’s Artibonite department, where several localities have come under armed attack in recent days, according to information gathered on the ground.

Communities targeted by armed groups

The areas of Pont-Benoît, Bwajou and Carrefour Roger, located in the Savien zone, were attacked Tuesday by heavily armed individuals.

According to multiple sources, the assailants carried out violent actions resulting in casualties and the destruction of several homes by fire. The exact toll remains difficult to verify independently at this stage.

Residents forced to flee

Faced with the violence, many residents fled their communities to escape the attacks. Entire families abandoned their homes and belongings, finding themselves displaced without shelter or immediate assistance.

Local actors and residents have issued urgent calls for help, urging authorities to intervene and provide support to those displaced.

Worsening humanitarian conditions

On the ground, humanitarian conditions are raising serious concerns. Affected populations lack basic resources, including food, drinking water and medical care, according to testimonies collected.

A series of attacks in the region

These incidents come just days after a deadly attack in Jean-Denis, also in Artibonite. According to several sources, more than 70 people were reportedly killed in that episode on Sunday.

The recurrence of such attacks underscores the ongoing deterioration of the security environment in the region.

Authorities silent amid criticism

As of Tuesday, no official response had been issued by government authorities regarding the latest violence. This silence has drawn criticism from segments of the public, with some denouncing a lack of action in the face of rising insecurity.

Population living in fear

In this context, residents of Artibonite continue to live in fear of further attacks, amid persistent insecurity and deep uncertainty.
