Customs: over $76,000 seized for non-declaration at Cibao
Santiago, March 29, 2026. Dominican authorities have seized $76,050 in undeclared cash at Cibao International Airport, underscoring tightened customs enforcement.
According to the Dirección General de Aduanas (DGA), officials intercepted two passengers in separate incidents: a Haitian national carrying $15,000, and another traveler arriving from the Turks and Caicos Islands with $61,050.
Both individuals allegedly attempted to enter the country without declaring the funds, in violation of customs regulations.
The total amount seized exceeds 4.5 million Dominican pesos.
Authorities reiterated that any sum above $10,000 must be declared upon entry.
The operation follows a recent seizure of $350,000 at the same airport, reflecting strengthened screening measures, including the use of X-ray systems and risk analysis tools.
Aviation: over 400 passengers stranded after aircraft failure
In a separate incident, a mechanical failure involving a World2Fly aircraft caused major disruption at Las Américas International Airport (AILA).
More than 435 passengers bound for Madrid were stranded for several hours, some from Thursday afternoon until Friday midday, with limited communication from the airline.
The situation sparked anger and protests inside the terminal, prompting authorities to reinforce security.
Some passengers were relocated to nearby hotels while awaiting repairs or alternative flight arrangements.
Héctor Porcella Dumas, president of the Civil Aviation Board, confirmed that the airline would cover accommodation and meals, while efforts are underway to rebook affected travelers.
