On March 3, 2026, Haitian citizens staged a peaceful demonstration in Juana Méndez, near the northern border with the Dominican Republic.
Protesters voiced opposition to a measure adopted by the mayor of Dajabón aimed at regulating the entry of foreign nationals into the municipality. Using three-wheeled transport motorcycles, demonstrators denounced what they described as an unfair restriction.
In response, the Cuerpo Especializado en Seguridad Fronteriza Terrestre (CESFRONT) reinforced security at the border checkpoint to prevent any potential incidents.
For his part, Mayor Santiago Riverón criticized what he called “blackmail,” referring to alleged threats of a possible border closure.
The mobilization underscores the sensitivity of relations between Haiti and the Dominican Republic, amid recurring tensions surrounding migration and trade issues.
Dominican authorities maintain that their objective is to preserve public order while avoiding any escalation.
